SACA is looking for a 2024 Community Mural Intern!
Start date: 31 May 2024 - Initial Meeting; official start will be 3 June 2024
End date: 9 August 2024
Schedule: 40hrs/week; may include weekdays and weekends, depending on programming
Deadline to apply: 8 May 2024
This is a PAID internship made possible by the Bexar County 2024 Arts Internship Grant. This internship pays $325 per week.
Description: The Summer 2024 SACA Community Mural Program Intern will be supporting the Community Mural & Public Art Coordinator with a variety of projects and tasks in the SACA Community Mural Program. This will include supporting SACA’s 2024 Summer Slay programming, a series of multi-generational fashion workshops leading up to our Summer Slay event (a community fashion show/lucha) - the intern will be working closely with hired Teaching Artists and other SACA Staff. This internship will also require the intern to support the Dedication & Blessing event for our 30th Anniversary Community Mural in July where the intern will support creative activities and the other aspects of the vent, as well as documenting and producing written coverage about the event and the mural’s crew and process for SACA’s community newspaper, El Placazo, and SACA archives. This will require the Intern to shadow and perform hands-on duties involving communicating and coordinating with their supervisor and the muralists; managing and tracking personal deadlines and project progress; and learning tangible project management skills for nonprofits (collecting quantitative & qualitative data, etc.). Additionally, the Intern will support the facilitation of the SACA Summer Teen Mural Training Program where they will assist the Community Mural & Public Art Coordinator and Teaching Artists and work with San Antonio youth to learn and practice muralism techniques, history, and more. The Intern will also document and produce written coverage about the SACA Summer Teen Mural Training Program for SACA’s community newspaper and archives. Lastly, the Intern will support the coordination of SACA’s annual Block Party event, a celebration of community where we have youth activities, live music, an art exhibition, vendors, and more.
This opportunity is perfect for any arts Intern to learn more about coordination of large-scale projects, programs, and events, more specifically community-driven mural projects and public art. The Intern will have the chance to network with our emerging and professional artists and other community leaders that our organization interacts with. The Intern will also gain experience working with youth in the arts and learn more about Creative Youth Development. The Intern will learn and be challenged to think critically about public art and its role in our communities; the Intern will be invited to be part of discussions, processes, and more where their voice will be encouraged to be heard. In addition to this specific project, the Intern will be able to be part of shadowing and managing other projects as well as experiencing any other community events or programming via our other programs (El Placazo, mural preservation and our youth program). Additionally, at the start of their internship, we will set up goals that the Intern will aim to achieve, including anything they’re specifically interested in that may not be listed above but still relevant to their time with our organization.
