East Side is Love - Tricentennial Mural

Picture
Location: Southwest Workers Union, 1416 East Commerce
Date: May 2018
Lead artist: Rudy Herrera
Assistant artists: Ana Hernandez, jason eric gonzales martinez, Rhys Munro

Our 56th mural is an official part of the City of San Antonio's Tricentennial Celebration. In partnership with Southwest Workers Union and American Indians in Texas at the Spanish Colonial Missions, the concept behind this piece is built around the indigenous peoples of San Antonio and the relationship they have had with the flora and fauna, the growing populace, technological advances, and the ever-changing landscape. It also acts as a welcoming visual to those entering the East Side on Commerce St.

After four community meetings, the final mock-up was approved by those in attendance on March 13, 2018. The cleaning and whitewashing process started the next day.  The mural was unveiled to the public on the same day the Southwest Workers Union celebrated its 50th anniversary. DJ Despeinada spun for the event.
