San Anto Cultural Arts is a grassroots nonprofit that was founded in 1993 with the mission to foster human and community development through community-based arts. Our vision is to build a community where people have the opportunity to realize their creative abilities, interpret their culture and heritage through their own vision, and to cultivate and showcase the talents among residents of San Antonio’s most economically impoverished communities.
As a way to combat violence, low graduation rates, and a lack of resources, San Anto Cultural Arts programs include El Placazo Community Newspaper, the Community Mural Program and Preservation Initiative, and the After School Arts Program. These dynamic programs engage residents and foster the talents of youth by educating them on history, techniques of public art, newspaper publication, literacy through the arts, and so much more.
El Placazo is a community-operated newspaper designed as an educational tool for participants interested in developing skills in all aspects of newspaper production. The newspaper serves as a unique outlet for our participants to express themselves and to document their culture.
The Community Mural Program identifies, develops and mobilizes artistically-inclined youth and young adults to create collaborative community murals and public art pieces within the San Antonio community. The goals of the program are to create and inspire collaborative, quality public art.
The After School Arts Program provides youth with basic art principles and hands-on techniques that translate into creative know-how and problem-solving skills useful in school, at home, the workplace, and beyond.
San Anto Cultural Arts, its youth, and its community, have produced over 65 murals, three public sculptures, and 234 issues of El Placazo Community Newspaper, and started a podcast and a YouTube channel. We continue to work diligently to provide services to roughly 1,000 community members each year.
Your gracious donation directly impacts the youth in our community by providing high-quality community-based arts programming. With your help, together, we can continue to provide the much-needed services that our youth, families, and communities deserve.
