#54
cultivate the path to prestige

Picture
Location: 2427 W Commerce St.
Date: December 2016
Lead Community Muralist: Crystal Arias
Mural Coordinator: Victor Zarazua

Cultivate the Path to Prestige is the second of San Anto’s mujerista murals. The sun and the moon are both included in the mural (depicted as women) to remind everyone that to reach success, you must work through both day and night. The mural shows a woman as a tree. Using her branches as arms, she caresses the globe, representing the female gifts of birth and protection. The rest of her branches bear fruits of knowledge that take the form of influential women of color.

From left to right, the figures in the mural are:
  • Gloria Anzaldúa – leading scholar of feminist, queer, and Chicana theory
  • Malala Yousafzai – Pakistani activist for female education
  • Maya Angelou – American poet, memoirist, and civil rights activist
  • Rigoberta Menchú – activist for indigenous and women’s rights from Guatemala
  • Sylva Rivera – American gay liberation and transgender activist and drag queen
  • Mary Agnes Rodriguez – San Anto artist, recognized throughout the community for her iconic artwork that reflects her personal ties to the West Side community
