San Anto Cultural Arts to Receive $20,000 Grant from the National Endowment for the Arts
National Endowment for the Arts Chairman Jane Chu has approved more than $80 million in grants as part of the NEA’s second major funding announcement for fiscal year 2018. Included in this announcement is an Art Works grant of $20,000 to San Anto Cultural Arts for the Community Mural and Public Art Program. The Art Works category is the NEA’s largest funding category and supports projects that focus on the creation of art that meets the highest standards of excellence, public engagement with diverse and excellent art, lifelong learning in the arts, and/or the strengthening of communities through the arts.
“The variety and quality of these projects speaks to the wealth of creativity and diversity in our country,” said NEA Chairman Jane Chu. “Through the work of organizations such as San Anto Cultural Arts in San Antonio, TX, NEA funding invests in local communities, helping people celebrate the arts wherever they are.”
“San Anto is excited and ready to utilize this grant for our Community Mural and Public Art Program,” said San Anto Cultural Arts Executive Director Ben Tremillo. “Funding like this is a vital part of our continuing work with San Antonio communities and youth, especially the underserved and economically disadvantaged.”
The Community Mural & Public Art Program is a unique, internationally recognized program that enhances the lives of individuals of all ages and backgrounds by promoting human and community development through cultural arts programming. The Mural Program has a long-term impact on the community with each mural it creates by reducing urban blight (tagging, vandalism, dumping), beautifying the neighborhood by turning street corners into open air museums, and providing a source of pride for community residents. San Anto’s murals document and preserve the rich history and heritage of San Antonio's most impoverished communities.
