FOR IMMEDIATE RELEASE

SAN ANTONIO (Oct. 24, 2003) - Free health screenings and other information offered at the upcoming Corazon y Familia Mural 5k Run/Walk offer an opportunity for participants of the Westside event to adopt healthier lifestyles, announced event organizer San Anto Cultural Arts.

The Corazon y Familia Mural 5K Run/Walk takes place Saturday, Nov. 8, at 8:30 a.m. at the Plaza Avenida Guadalupe at 1327 Guadalupe street. The event promotes health and fitness while serving as a showcase for the murals and public art produced by San Anto Cultural Arts' Community Mural Program. Registration begins at 7:30 a.m. Pre-registration is $15, $20 race day. Residents of the 78207 zip code are not required to pay a fee.

Startling statistics about the health of Mexican Americans underscore the need for health awareness in the mostly Mexican American Westside:

- According to a recent study published by the National Institutes of Health, Mexican Americans living in San Antonio are more than twice as likely to develop diabetes than Mexicans living in Mexico City. Those in the San Antonio group are also more likely to have high blood pressure and cholesterol levels. Poor eating and exercise habits are reportedly to blame.

- According to the American Obesity Association, the prevalence of overweight Mexican Americans reached 73.4 percent between 1999 and 2000 (Overweight is defined as having a body mass index (BMI) of 25.0 to 29.9. Obesity is defined as having a BMI of 30 or more. A formula and calculator for figuring BMI is available online at the U.S. Centers for Disease Control and Prevention Web site, http://www.cdc.gov/nccdphp/dnpa/bmi/calc-bmi.htm).

- A study presented at the 2002 American Heart Association Asia Pacific Scientific Forum found that Mexican Americans are 1.9 times more likely to die from coronary heart disease than non-Hispanic whites.

- San Antonio's reputation as an unhealthy city reaches as far away as England where a recent story in London's Observer reaffirms the city's "Fat City" label and criticizes the city for not doing more to promote health and fitness: "In San Antonio, it is almost impossible to walk anywhere as the blocks are so large, the roads so wide. The only people you see using their legs are tourists or the homeless."

"San Anto Cultural Arts' Corazon y Familia Mural 5K Run/Walk is unique in that we are utilizing our murals to bring to light the serious issues of public health in our Mexicano community," said SACA Executive Director, Manuel Castillo. "A healthy community needs art, creativity and strong hearts and minds - literally."

Major sponsors of the event include HEB Making Connections and City Public Service.

SAN ANTONIO (Oct. 15, 2003) - San Anto Cultural Arts (SACA) and honorary co-chairs, District 5 Councilwoman Patti Radle, and University of Texas at San Antonio President, Ricardo Romo, today announced the birth of San Antonio's newest community health event. The Corazon y Familia Mural 5K Run/Walk takes place Saturday, Nov. 8, at 8:30 a.m. at the Plaza Avenida Guadalupe at 1327 Guadalupe street in the heart of the city's Westside. Registration begins at 7:30 a.m.

The event promotes health and fitness while serving as a showcase for the murals and public art produced by San Anto Cultural Arts' Community Mural Program. The Mural 5k route guides participants through the surrounding community and past 18 murals created by Westside residents through the Mural Program.

"This is a very exciting event for us," said SACA Executive Director, Manuel Castillo. "As our mural program grew within our Westside Mural District, we knew that some day we would be able to organize a 5K routed along our murals. That day has come."

Over 200 participants are expected to enjoy free refreshments, live music and entertainment and health screenings provided at the event. All participants receive a free t-shirt and commemorative ribbon.

Pre-registration is $15 with a race day fee of $20. Residents of the 78207 zip code are not required to pay a fee. Registration forms are available by calling SACA at (210) 226-7466 or online at http://www.sananto.org.

Major sponsors for the first annual event include HEB Making Connections and City Public Service.
