The Por Nuestros Ojos/Through Our Eyes project was a photo documentary initiative funded through a National Endowment for the Arts grant awarded to our organization in August of 2002. The photo documentary project took place over a 10 month period within the Cassiano Homes Public Housing Neighborhood, in the heart of our city's Westside. The two people that spear-headed the project were long-time San Anto participants, Danny Delgado, then, a junior at UTSA studying Mexican- American Studies, and Cristina Ordoņez, then, a freshman at UTSA and studying Bilingual Education.

The purpose of the Cassiano Homes project was to document the reality and importance of the daily life of youth and their families living in the "Cassianos", or "Ghost Town". Through this project, families worked as a team to document daily life, learn photography skills and eventually display their work in a final exhibit in the Cassiano Homes community. Eleven families were chosen to participate in the project. A member of each family, were given disposable cameras to document his/her everyday life: everything from family cookouts to hanging out with friends.

The purpose of the project was to also give Cassiano Home residents the opportunity to represent who they are and where they come from through photography. Through the works of the participants we were able to get a glimpse of what their life is like and perhaps see our own reflected through their work. Each of the participants told their stories as they live them and as they see them, through their eyes.

As the project came under way the ministry, Principe de Paz, who work directly with the residents of the homes, volunteered their space in one of the Cassiano Home units to hold the opening of the exhibit, which took place on June 21st 2003, and to have the photos displayed permanently and at the availability of all who wished to stopped by.

We would like to thank the Cassiano Homes staff, San Antonio Housing Authority, Principe de Paz, Isaac Cardenas, Cros One, Scuba Gooding Jr., The National Endowment for the Arts and the families who let us into their homes.
